  - question: "What colour temperature is best for a bedroom?"
answer: "Most people find bulbs around 2700K the warmest and easiest to settle into in the evening, with 3000K a reasonable middle option. Cool white bulbs above 4000K tend to feel harsher at night. If your bedroom feels clinical, colour temperature is usually the first thing to change."
  - question: "Will fairy lights be enough as the only light in a bedroom?"
answer: "They are pleasant as an accent but usually too dim to do anything by. Keeping one brighter lamp at seated height and using lights for atmosphere gives you both function and softness."
  - question: "Are the product links affiliate links?"
answer: "Yes. Product suggestions may contain Amazon affiliate links with our tag, and we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you if you buy through them. Our recommendations remain independent and are suggestions, not prescriptions."

Bedroom lighting is the easiest thing in a home to change and the one most likely to change how an evening feels. Warm, low, layered light tells a room that the day is over. Bright overhead light tells it that there is still work to do.

The fifteen ideas below start with free changes and move towards purchases. Read them in order and you will probably get through the first five without spending anything. If you want the wider context on how a room affects rest, our [sensory guide to a restful room](/blog/the-light-scent-texture-of-a-restful-room/) covers the same ground in more detail.

## Layer the Light

## 1. Turn off the ceiling light at sunset

No purchase, and usually the biggest change you can make. If you need a rule for it, decide in advance that the ceiling light goes off when it gets dark outside.

## 2. Put one lamp on each side if the bed is shared

Two low lamps let both people read without one of them sitting in the dark. It is the clearest example of layered lighting solving a practical problem.

## 3. Aim light at a wall, not at your face

A lamp pointed into the far wall bounces light back softly and is much easier to lie beside than an exposed bulb. Turning a shade slightly upward does the same thing for free.

## 4. Keep every light in the bedroom below eye level

Anything above eye level is harder to rest beside. Low lamps on a chest, a shelf or the floor are easier than a ceiling fitting or a tall floor lamp beside the bed.

## 5. Use one switch you can reach from bed

If getting up to turn the light off is the reason you read less, move the switch. This is a free change with a surprisingly large effect on whether you use the room.

## Warm Bulbs and Lamps

## 6. Swap your main bulb for a warm one

Change one bulb in the fitting you use most, and leave the rest. A 2700K bulb in a bedside fitting is the highest-value single purchase on this list.

## 7. Add a dimmer to one circuit

A dimmer lets one lamp do the work of three brightnesses, which is what a bedroom actually needs across an evening. Fit the dimmer to a lamp rather than to a whole room.

<ProductBox name="Dimmable warm light bulb" keywords="dimmable light bulb warm" note="If a bulb is dimmable it is worth checking that the dimmer is sold for mains voltage bulbs; the cheap trailing-edge dimmers in hardware stores are often the reason a dimmable bulb still flickers." />

## 8. Choose a lamp with a shade that hangs low

A drum shade or a fabric shade throws light up and down and softens it. A bare bulb or a clear glass shade does the opposite.

## 9. Use one light for reading and a different one for winding down

A brighter lamp for reading and a dimmer one for the last ten minutes. Two settings rather than one is what makes a room usable at both ends of the night.

## 10. Put a warm light where you undress

A small lamp in a wardrobe or a hallway light on a timer means you are not walking into a dark room half-asleep. It is the least cosy item here and one of the most practical.

## Fairy Light and Accent Details

## 11. Put one warm string of lights along a wall

One run, plugged into a wall rather than draped everywhere, looks deliberate. Warm white bulbs read as softer than the cool white most strings ship with.

<ProductBox name="Warm white string lights" keywords="warm white plug in fairy lights" note="Warm white bulbs are usually labelled around 2700K. Battery-operated strings are worth it if there is no socket where you want them." />

## 12. Light one shelf and leave the rest of the room dark

A single lit shelf becomes the focal point of a dark bedroom, and one shelf of books catching warm light does more than three lamps do.

## 13. Put a small light behind a plant

A hidden light behind a plant throws a shadow pattern on the wall that changes through the evening. It is the cheapest atmospheric effect available.

## 14. Use a warm light you can reach without standing

A wall light with a pull cord, a bedside switch, or a lamp switch you can operate from a lying position. Function beats atmosphere when the light is too hard to reach.

## 15. Set a rule that the bedroom has no bright light after a certain hour

Pick a time—nine, ten, half past—and treat it as the point at which the room's lighting stays low for the rest of the night. It turns a collection of lamps into an actual evening.

**Lighting changes how a room feels; it does not change how you feel.** If you are sleeping badly, exhausted without rest, or noticing persistent low mood, a qualified health or mental-health professional can help you work out what fits your situation.
