faq:
  - question: "Is shadow work safe to do alone?"
answer: "Gentle, self-directed reflection can be supportive, but it is not a substitute for therapy. The prompts here are intentionally soft and never push you toward painful material. If a prompt feels overwhelming, stop and return to something grounding instead."
  - question: "Do I need a special journal for these prompts?"
answer: "No. Any notebook or even a blank page works. If you would like a dedicated journal, one is suggested as an optional tool — you are never required to buy anything."
  - question: "Are the product links affiliate links?"
answer: "Yes. Suggested products may contain Amazon affiliate links with our tag, and we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Recommendations are independent suggestions, not prescriptions."

Shadow work is a way of getting curious about the parts of yourself you usually avoid: the feelings you rush past, the reactions you are embarrassed by, and the patterns you blame. It is not about finding something broken. It is about widening the story you tell about yourself.

You can do this with a pen, a notes app, or simply in your head. Start with one prompt, not all fifteen — if you are new to the practice, our [beginner's guide to shadow work](/blog/shadow-work-for-beginners/) is a good place to begin. If a question feels like too much, choose a different one or stop for the day. Journaling is not a substitute for professional support, and these prompts are invitations, not obligations.

## 1. What am I avoiding today?

Name the practical or emotional thing your mind keeps circling. Avoidance is information, not a character flaw.

## 2. What feeling do I reach for an excuse instead of saying?

“I am not tired, I am avoiding X.” Try writing the honest version once, just for you.

## 3. What did I want to say this week and not say?

You do not have to send it. Naming the unsaid sentence helps you notice what matters to you.

## 4. Who do I get annoyed by — and why might that be about me?

This is not about blaming yourself. It is a mirror prompt: the trait you cannot stand in others sometimes lives quietly in you.

## 5. What did I repeat this week that I swore I would not repeat?

Name it plainly, without a verdict. Patterns lose power when they are named.

## 6. What part of me is exhausted?

Your fatigue might be a voice. Write down what the tired part of you would say if it could speak.

## 7. What am I keeping to keep peace?

Name one thing you do not say, do, or ask for because it might cause friction. Then ask: what would I want to happen instead?

## 8. When did I shrink myself this week?

A small, specific moment where you made yourself smaller than you are. It counts even if it was minor.

## 9. What do I judge other people for — harshly?

Your harshest judgments are often whispers about your own fears. Write the judgment, then the whisper underneath.

## 10. What did my younger self need that I did not get?

This can be a literal memory or an imagined one. Let the younger part describe the need without fixing it. If you want to go deeper, our [inner child journaling practice](/blog/inner-child-journaling-self-connection/) is a gentle companion for listening to that younger voice.

## 11. What am I proud of that I rarely admit?

The bright side of the shadow is also hidden. Claim one achievement or quality you usually deflect.

## 12. What do I do when I feel unseen?

Name the behavior: explain more, withdraw, over-function, or people-please. Just noticing the pattern is enough for today.

## 13. What is a boundary I have not actually set?

List the boundary you have been postponing — with a person, a task, or yourself — and one honest sentence about the cost of keeping it unspoken.

## 14. What would I do if I stopped performing?

Write one thing you would do differently if no one were watching.

## 15. What is the kindest truth I have been avoiding?

End on the gentlest question. The answer might be the whole point of the week.

**Start where it is easy.** One prompt, two sentences, no grading. Shadow work is a practice of becoming curious, not of fixing yourself. If exploration surfaces feelings that feel too heavy, or if you are struggling with persistent low mood, anxiety, or self-harm thoughts, please reach out to a qualified professional or a crisis line.
