Tea traditions take many different forms across cultures. At home, making a cup can be a modest opportunity to slow down without needing to turn an ordinary drink into a performance.

**A cup of tea can be a container for attention.**

Here is a three-step practice that requires nothing but a cup, hot water, and a willingness to be present.

## Step 1: Boil with Intention

As the water heats, resist the urge to check your phone. Instead, listen. The water has stages: first it whispers, then it hums, then it roars. Each stage is a call to come back to now.

## Step 2: Pour and Wait

Pour the water over your leaves or bag. Watch the color bloom. Wait the full steep time — not 30 seconds less because you're impatient. The waiting is the practice, a small taste of the [slow living approach](/blog/slow-living-real-life/) in an ordinary cup.

## Step 3: Receive the First Sip

Hold the cup in both hands. Feel the warmth. Bring it to your nose. Then take the first sip and let it sit in your mouth for a moment before swallowing.

That is enough: three steps, a few minutes, and an ordinary moment you chose to notice — the same spirit behind our [15 autumn slow rituals](/blog/15-autumn-slow-rituals/) for the cozy season.
